From Enemies to Friends

Tyler Benson, a bright fourth-grade student, came to us this year unable to read. Experts had told him he would never learn. Real Black Excellence became his last hope—a place where we refused to accept limits.

With unwavering love, encouragement, determination, and support, we poured into Tyler, helping him build confidence and self-worth. He began to believe in himself, uncovering strength he never knew he had. Through perseverance, he defied expectations, transforming not just into a reader, but into a confident young man who is eager to make his mark on the world.

On November 1, 2024, Tyler-the-Reader read his first book ever! In celebration of his incredible journey, we declared November 1st Tyler-the-Reader Day, an official RBE holiday—a day to honor a young man who overcame obstacles and unlocked the power of literacy—it’s a day to celebrate resilience, determination and the power of believing in oneself.

Not only did Tyler learn to read, but he went on to write his own book, sharing a heartfelt message about kindness. In his story, he reflects on how some people put others down, believing themselves superior. Yet, in the end, he reaches a profound conclusion: we all need each other, and the world would be a far happier place if we embraced friendship.

Tyler’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and inspiration. I am deeply honored to have been his teacher this year, and I know without a doubt—his future is bright!
